BCLPRD Harvesting Information

Update on Weed Harvesting Operations

The Lake District is aware of the growing amount of floating weeds on the North end of the Lake.

We have been working to remove as much as possible with some restrictions.

The picture above is of a species referred to as Celery grass a.k.a. Eelgrass or Tapegrass and is native and healthy for our lake.

This specific plant is being seen floating and growing from the lake bed at many different locations on the lake including the sensitive area on the North end. It is native to Big Cedar Lake and great for fish habitat. However, in late summer, it releases from the lake bed.

Neighbors to neighbors, we would like to ask everyone that is able, to assist with removing these plants and placing them on their piers or shorelines to be picked up by our crew. Please make sure that if you place weeds on your shoreline for pickup that our barge can easily access that shoreline area.

Scheduled pier pickup days are Tuesday and Fridays and the crew will be working with our harvesters on the other days of the week.

The district is able to skim and collect these floating weeds wherever possible, but there are some "zones" that caution must be used not to disrupt other native plants.

The heavy rains in April (high water emergency/SNW Order), followed by dry conditions in May without cloud cover, provided great conditions for plant growth in the lake this year.

It will be a challenge these next few weeks as we lose most of our summer crew returning to school.

We ask for your patience and understanding as we are scheduling heavy skimming and harvesting next week and hopefully into the following week prior to Labor Day Weekend to keep up with removing the vegetation that we are allowed.
